Book Review – The Black Prism (Lightbringer #1) by Brent Weeks

I finished reading┬áThe Black Prism by Brent Weeks earlier this week. I really enjoyed it. I love the idea of magic that has colors associated with different aspects of what it can do. I don’t know for sure, but I wonder if its the same world as the one he created in The Way of Shadows.

I empathized with Kip because of all the bad things happening to him, but he does seem to be a brat. He feels sorry for himself too much. With him having to take care of himself, you would think he was more mature in mind than he’s being portrayed. It seemed like this series focused more on plot than it did on character. There were cool fantastical devices and the characters were even more fantastical, but I wonder if that made them harder to relate to. Maybe it was just the scenes picked from their lives that made the characters seem more shallow. Or maybe it was because Kip really is a dumb character. He never really knows what’s going on through most of the book. He is filled with wonder at the amazing places he goes, but he is led around by the nose in most of the scenes. I really like the world he is in and I love what is going on with the secrets of some of the characters, but it doesn’t feel like we advanced very far in the series with this book. I’ll keep reading his stories, but there are still places where he can improve. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
