Book Review – The Way of Shadows (Night Angel #1) by Brent Weeks

I finished reading this book last week. I liked it a lot. I love the idea of magic that has color associated with it. There was an old MUD (multi-user dungeon) that I used to play that used color to determine what level of strength you were as a mage. The color scheme in this world seems to use different colors of magic to show whether something is fire related, shadow and death related, etc. I don’t know for sure, but I wonder if its the same world as the world of The Black Prism. I like the story about someone growing up to be a thief, then an assassin, then a wet-boy. I’m not sure that I would ever want to be called a wet-boy, but in this world that is what they call something that is better than an assassin. The overarching plot kept me guessing enough of the time to make it an interesting read. Yet, there were times you could predict what would happen. I’m being vague because I don’t want to give any spoilers. I absolutely hate spoilers. I loved the fact that prophecy in this world isn’t something simple. It has a painful cost and doesn’t always give enough information. Its more of a “when you see this, do this” type of prophecy.

If it weren’t for the information dumps that happen fairly often, I would give it full marks. However, there were several times that I would tune out what I was reading and have to go back a few sentences to see if there was any information I might have missed. There were enough enjoyable things in this book that outweigh my complaints, so I give it a 4 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend reading it. Just because it isn’t the perfect book doesn’t mean you shouldn’t read it. Just be prepared to work a little harder at suspending your disbelief.
